Welcome to Mortgage and the City, LLC
dba MATC Consulting

We’re dedicated to giving you the very best in mortgage operations consulting, with a focus on building a best in class mortgage operations team, exceptional credit risk policies and procedures, comprehensive training programs, and increased retention – both in talent and clientele.

After 20 years in the mortgage industry, the drive to help as many mortgage professionals, real estate agents, and borrowers as possible became overwhelming to CEO and founder, Sarah E. Berkowitz-Melton.

She knew in order to help more people, she would have to change the way she provided her knowledge and expertise, so instead of simply being an employee for one company, the idea to start a consulting business specializing in mortgage operations was born.

When we started in 2022, our passion for top notch mortgage practices drove us to an action: create a step-by-step guide wherein all mortgage companies could provide A+ service to their borrowers and referral partners, all the while growing their talented teams. MATC serves customers all over the DMV (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia), with select services available nationwide, and we are thrilled to share our passion with you.

Our goal is to provide comprehensive analyses on any facet of operational departments and/or systems, outline a plan for success or continued improvement, and even get your organization to the finish line with training and project management.

Now, you may be wondering what questions may have come up that would create such a drive and passion, so here are a few:

What are the main reasons many mortgage teams and companies do not have sustainable growth?

Many would assume a lack of sales would be the primary reason a company may stall, but that is not generally the case. You can have top talent within your sales division, but if your company does not have seamless operational processes, or smart yet competitive credit risk policies and procedures, it will be impossible to retain that amazing sales team!

Example: If loan officers bring in loans that cannot quickly and effectively be processed and submitted into underwriting, the lack of customer service will drive your borrowers and referral partners into the arms of another lender…guess what goes next? Sales! They will waive goodbye and go in search of greener pastures which leads to a loss of earnings, reduction in talented operations staffing and the vicious cycle simply repeats itself and snowballs out of control.

What do you mean by “operational processes”?

Operations is an overarching term that can be applied to various departments within your mortgage lending division and includes everything from processing, to underwriting, closing, post-closing and even Quality Control. From a practical application, operations encompasses credit risk policies and procedures, training and development, and IT/LOS enhancement. With every step of the loan, there operations lies.

How do improved credit risk policies and procedures impact my ability to bring in business? Isn’t that all about the talent level of my sales team?

Not at all! Sales cannot carry the weight of your success alone! In order to be successful in an ever-changing business, we need to give the talent the ability to be competitive.

This is achieved by offering a wide range of products while still ensuring that the company’s overall risk is mitigated as much as possible. This allows loans can be originated, sold, and insured. This arena can be difficult to navigate alone, which is where MATC Consulting comes in.

Why would I need to ask for external help in training my staff when I have talent on my team already?

While hands on, day-to-day training from your team of experts is something that should be happening daily to ensure continued growth and team building, sometimes the objective external knowledge of a seasoned professional is the best way to get your operations teams to buy in to a new challenge.

The old adage of “those who cannot do, teach” is often times NOT true. Those in a position to teach within an organization (i.e., your senior level staff) often have a full plate of daily responsibilities, and simply do not have the bandwidth to create and provide a full training program to enhance staff knowledge and engagement.

Example: Allowing a fully delegated underwriter who has years of experience in teaching accelerated government delegation courses come into your company and provide a full training platform complete with tools, tips and tricks, allows your current staff to keep producing, while still offering career growth and new skills to your team.

Think of having the best of both worlds – daily production goals met AND operations staff that has the ability to take on more challenging files.

Where could I go to get such a vast level of help and service?
